From the day I came up with the dilettante I knew I wanted it to be a brand that’s not defined by a single topic, area of interest, or pursuit. I thought of it as a lifestyle and culture brand, covering not just travel, but tech, business, music, art, and whatever else us multifaceted, multi-interest misfits are interested in. Travel was just a kick off towards the greater vision. I am the chief vibe officer after all, and the vibes can be curated in a lot of areas, not just travel. 

So today, the dilettante is officially not a Substack newsletter anymore, but an umbrella brand for many of my upcoming and future projects.

For starters, it includes the revived tech brat, whose first letter back will be published this Thursday, and a new project I’ll be soft launching this Sunday.

I’m excited to continue writing about things I’m interested in, in a very low-pressure, doing-it-for-fun-and-learning, kind of way. The name “the dilettante” was always a bit of a self-deprecating joke - someone who has so many interests, but none are pursued in a “serious” way. Serious as in the way scientists devote their lives to researching a certain topic, or serious in a way art critics spend their days analyzing the brush strokes of an up and coming artist, or in the way restaurant critics risk high cholesterol for the thrill of making or breaking some chef’s career…

If I learned anything it’s that the dilettantes in this world are far more interesting individuals than the “experts.” They resist being defined by a single pursuit, profession, or path. They follow their fascinations, wherever they lead, and build a life driven by intuition, taste, and insatiable curiosity. 

I am thrilled to be able to share the fruits of the experiences, thoughts, and research that come out of my insatiable curiosity, however the hell I want to.
